2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Review: Sharp Looks, Spacious Cabin and Exceptional Fuel Economy — The Family SUV Benchmark Returns

Since its debut in 1994, the Toyota RAV4 has become one of the brand's most successful nameplates, with nearly 15 million units sold worldwide. Now in its sixth generation, the latest RAV4 arrives in Singapore with a completely redesigned exterior and interior. The question is: does this new model have what it takes to replicate its global success on local roads?

We spent a week behind the wheel to find out.

A Design That Turns Heads

The previous-generation RAV4 was already a sharp-looking SUV, with its angular lines and crisp creases. The new model takes things further.

Up front, the RAV4 adopts Toyota's distinctive "hammerhead" design language, a styling cue we've seen across the brand's recent lineup. There's also a new honeycomb grille, reminiscent of the Corolla Cross, that adds a touch of sophistication. Generous use of matte plastic cladding around the wheel arches and lower body sections, combined with a prominent rear bumper, gives the RAV4 the rugged, adventure-ready appearance that SUV buyers typically look for.

It's a design that manages to feel both fresh and familiar—a balance that's harder to strike than it looks.

A Cabin That Works as Hard as You Do

Step inside, and the RAV4's interior is equally well-executed. The fully digital driver's instrument cluster offers multiple display layouts, presenting key driving information in a clear and easy-to-read format.

The centrepiece is a new 10.5-inch infotainment display, which is responsive and intuitive to use. It now comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, making smartphone integration seamless. The screen also houses controls for the air-conditioning and ventilated front seats, though Toyota has wisely retained physical knobs for volume and temperature—a thoughtful touch that avoids the frustration of digging through menus while driving.

Practicality is a strong suit here. The cabin features two inductive smartphone chargers, two 45W USB ports, and a clever centre console cover that flips over to serve as a tray for small items. Rear passengers are well catered for with generous legroom, while the 749-litre boot provides ample space for everything from weekly grocery hauls to weekend getaway luggage.

Behind the Wheel: Smooth, Efficient and Surprisingly Composed

The driving experience is where the RAV4 truly shines. The powertrain is familiar to Toyota fans—a 2.5-litre hybrid unit that produces a combined 215bhp, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Push the RAV4 hard, and you'll hear the engine roar as the CVT holds revs high. But with a century sprint time of just 8.0 seconds, that noise doesn't last long. Where the RAV4 really excels, however, is when you take a more relaxed approach. Gentle throttle inputs are met with smooth, linear acceleration that makes city driving a breeze.

7.jpg

And then there's the efficiency. Over our test drive, the RAV4 returned an impressive average fuel economy of 19.6 km/L—right on par with Toyota's official figures. For a family SUV of this size, that's outstanding.

Ride quality is another highlight. The suspension is softly sprung, as you'd expect from a family hauler, yet it exhibits decent body control and composure even through sweeping bends or uneven roads. Road and wind noise are well insulated, making for a quiet and refined cabin environment.

The Elephant in the Room: Price

So, is the new RAV4 destined for success in Singapore? That depends largely on how you weigh its strengths against its price tag.

At **$248,888** (including COE), the RAV4 sits at a premium end of the segment. Its closest competitor, the Nissan X-Trail, offers a hybrid drivetrain and three rows of seats for $252,800—a compelling alternative for those needing extra passenger capacity. Meanwhile, the Subaru Forester, which now also comes with a hybrid option, is available from just $199,800.

However, for buyers who prioritise fuel economy and appreciate the RAV4's sharp new styling, the price may well be justified. The RAV4's reputation for reliability and strong resale value also adds to its long-term appeal.

Final Verdict

The sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 is a compelling package. Its bold exterior design, practical and well-equipped cabin, and impressively efficient hybrid drivetrain make it a strong contender in the family SUV segment. It's comfortable, capable, and easy to live with—everything you'd expect from a vehicle that has sold 15 million units worldwide.

But in Singapore's unique market context, its premium pricing does give buyers reason to pause. If you're willing to stretch your budget for a stylish, fuel-sipping SUV with Toyota's legendary reliability, the RAV4 is an excellent choice. Just be sure to weigh it against the competition before signing on the dotted line.

For families who value efficiency, design, and a comfortable ride above all else, however, the new RAV4 remains a benchmark—and a worthy successor to the nameplate's legendary legacy.
